Montreal, May 14, 2012 – McAuslan Brewing launches this week in stores their limited edition St-Ambroise Framboise.

St-Ambroise Framboise is ruby red in colour and brewed with real raspberries and choice hops. This 5% alcohol by volume beer won Silver at the 2011 Canadian Brewing Awards.

“This is a refreshing summertime beer – emphasis on the word “beer”. We brew Raspberry Ale only once a year and when it’s gone, it’s gone” says Peter McAuslan, Founder and President of McAuslan Brewing. “Brewing specialty ales for our consumers’ enjoyment is important to us, and is our way of thanking those who enjoy our beers.”

The“Sinus” glass, from German glassmaker ‘Sahm’, 2007 winner of the prestigious “Red dot” design award, was chosen to be the official St-Ambroise Framboise glass.

The approximate retail cost for a four-pack of St-Ambroise Framboise is $9.99. It is available at grocery stores and dépanneurs. Store listings can be found atwww.mcauslan.com. The beer and glass will also be available at McAuslan’s ‘Mondial de la bière’ kiosk at Place Bonaventure, June 6th-10th.

About McAuslan Brewing:

Established in 1988, and located in St. Henri along the banks of the Lachine Canal, McAuslan’s year-round offerings include: St. Ambroise Pale Ale, Oatmeal Stout, Apricot Wheat Ale, Cream Ale, and Griffon Extra Pale Ale and Red Ale. In June 2011, St-Ambroise Pale Ale and Griffon Extra Pale Ale were awarded the top place in their respective categories by consumer report magazine, Protegez-Vous.

There’s something about Montreal. Maybe it’s the city’s bilingualism. Maybe it’s the multiculturalism. Maybe it’s the infusion of youthful energy that stems from having the highest concentration of college students in North America. It’s hard to peg, but there’s something different about Canada’s second-largest city.

“It’s a particular place,” says Peter McAuslan, who founded Montreal’s McAuslan Brewing in 1989. “It’s a very open place, but it’s an environment where people huddle together to stay out of the cold. When people get together like that, good ideas arise.”

That explains how the city gave rise to the likes of Cirque du Soleil and Arcade Fire, how it came to host world-class festivals such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival and Just for Laughs, as well as how it came to be the center of Canada’s craft brewing revolution.

For more than a half century, the lion’s share of beer that Canadians drink has come from two breweries — Labatt and Molson — both of which are now owned by the same two mammoth corporations that dominate the American beer market: Anheuser-Busch InBevand MillerCoors.

Just as the American craft beer movement began in California with breweries like Anchor Brewing and Sierra Nevada producing beers that were unlike any others on the market, the Canadian movement was begun in and around Montreal, by the likes of McAuslan and Unibroue founders Andre Dion and Serge Racine who, sparked by the creative vibe of the city, sought to produce beers more like those they had tasted in Europe but that were unknown or obscure in Canada.

When McAuslan launched McAuslan Brewing, he brewed a pale ale. A few years later he added St-Ambroise Oatmeal Stout, a jet-black beer with hints of dark chocolate, roasted coffee and molasses. Unibroue’s first beers were Blanche de Chambly, a crisp, peppery witbier, and Maudite, a spicy, amber-hued Belgian strong ale.

The beers were unlike anything else around.

“We had to teach people that this is what beer could be,” says Jerry Vietz, Unibroue’s head brewer.

Their efforts worked — and they eventually sparked more brewers to enter the scene. One of the most noteworthy, Dieu du Ciel, opened up shop in Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood in 1998. The brewery’s output includes beers like Derniere Volonte, a crisp Belgian pale ale with delicate floral notes.

It isn’t just that Montreal is home to roughly 15 breweries, not counting Unibroue, which is in nearby Chambly, but it’s the quality of those breweries that’s special. It has to be that way, McAuslan says, because Quebecers demand it. “The scene reflects our cultural values,” he says.

Try it:

Dieu du Ciel Derniere Volonte: A cloudy, blond beer with floral notes that balance the bright nectarine, apple and hay flavors.

McAuslan St-Ambroise Oatmeal Stout: A bold, pitch-black beer with aggressive dark chocolate, roasted coffee and molasses flavors.

Unibroue Blanche de Chambly: A hazy golden beer with notes of black pepper, dried orange peel and coriander.

Unibroue Maudite: A spicy orange-hued beer that has bright clove and caramel notes.
